What is intersex?
How common are intersex conditions? How are intersex people affected by intersex conditions? What do intersex people want? What can be done to improve intersex people's lives? Is there a right to "self-determination" for intersex people?
The Intersex Society of North America defines intersex as "an umbrella term for a diverse range of differences in sexual development and anatomy, not of a sexual nature". Intersex conditions have arisen from genes, hormone levels, chromosome abnormalities, and other factors.
Intersex health is sometimes seen as a human rights issue. The Intersex Society of North America reports that at least one in 2,000 children is born with intersex conditions that can leave them with serious or permanent health complications. If they do not undergo surgery before puberty, most of these intersex individuals will be part of the 0.5% of the population who will experience some degree of intersex variation. The differences in individuals' sex characteristics can affect their health status, reproduction, social and work life, as well as physical appearance. Some intersex conditions such as Klinefelter syndrome can increase the risk of cancer.
Some intersex conditions may be a sign of a wider health issue in a person. There are concerns that these conditions are being inadequately taken into account in medical interventions, especially in infancy and childhood. Children who are born intersex may need to go through puberty as a female, or be unable to become pregnant or have children, and intersex individuals may also face pressure to have surgery to conform to stereotypes about their sex.
In many countries, intersex persons are often denied or given surgical treatment too early or without permission. Governments and public figures often refrain from publicly discussing intersex children. Organizations have called on governments to prohibit routine medical interventions for intersex children. Intersex persons who seek to undergo surgery may find that it is not only legal but also medically necessary.
Others may take a more liberal approach to the surgical interventions, which are often recommended during adolescence and early adulthood. According to some intersex people, medical intervention, in addition to being physically traumatic, also carries a stigma and shame that they believe reduces the intersex community.
Many intersex people take a vocal position on the current legal status of intersex children, arguing that their rights are important, and early or unwanted surgery should be abolished.
In conclusion, intersex activists like myself often reject medical interventions. Our job is to make the world a more appealing place for intersex people, and that is what I aim to do with my online presence.

Why is intersex important?
The term Intersex has an enormous umbrella definition of “sex characteristics including chromosomes, gonads, sex hormones, or genitals that ... do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies.” Jasper Holton was born intersex, a person who's female and male. Jasper is a singer as well as a violinist, digital artist, and developer. Their music includes a multitude of upbeat anthems and fast-paced, cinematic melodies, with a wide range of instruments together with drums, piano, guitar, synthesizer, violin, cello, and more.
Intersex is a common word used to describe those that are born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not match the standard definition of masculine or feminine. This may be apparent at delivery or turn out to be so later in life e.g. puberty. Intersex people, identical to dyadic people, could establish with any sexual orientation or identification. While we’ve seen much progress in documenting what gender means, what ‘trans’ means, and how these terms relate to society, far more work must be accomplished to understand the meaning of the word intersex. As well as this, not a lot has been revealed about intersex individuals, who type part of the ever-elongating LGBTQIA acronym for sexual minorities. Degrees of intersexuality range in intensity from the presence of an additional Y chromosome to being born with a combined set of genitals.
Though an appearance of sexual normalcy can be constructed, recent science has shown that surgical procedures previously deemed necessary for intersex people were in fact unnecessary. Consequently, procedures performed to reassign intersex people cannot be reversed. In 2016, Australian Human Rights Commissioner Ed Santow endorsed worldwide calls to finish medically pointless procedures to safeguard the human rights of intersex kids. There is a rising awareness in Australia of the potential human rights abuses on intersex youngsters. Genital “normalizing” procedures on young kids nonetheless happen in Australia and worldwide at present.
What's important to focus on in moving forward with this new scientific evidence showing that intersex conditions are normal and harmless, is promoting human rights and equality for all intersex people through art, schooling, and action.
